Market Update: Ireland Records 65% Growth in Solar PV Applications for Q1 2026

Ireland’s home energy upgrade program is experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand. Driven by a massive wave of Solar PV Applications, the rapid acceleration of solar adoption, and rising energy awareness, the Irish residential market is transitioning to green energy faster than ever before.

Solar PV Leads the Charge with 65% Growth

According to the latest statistics from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the government body managing the scheme, applications for the home energy upgrade initiative rose by 96% in early 2026.

In total, over 29,000 applications were processed between January and March of this year. Residential solar energy proved to be the primary driver:

  • Solar PV Applications: Exceeded 10,000 submissions.
  • Year-on-Year Increase: A remarkable 65% jump compared to the same period in 2025.

Rapid Growth Across Insulation and Heat Pumps

While solar PV dominated in sheer volume, other energy-efficiency categories recorded the highest percentage increases year-on-year, showcasing a holistic approach to home upgrades:

  • Attic Insulation: Applications surged by 81%, totaling over 1,730.
  • Heat Pumps: Applications rose by 95%, reaching approximately 350 submissions.

Government Backing for Solar PV Applications: €640M Budget and Energy Poverty Initiatives

To support this momentum, the Irish government has allocated a massive €640 million ($751.1 million) in its 2026 budget, aiming to achieve 73,000 home energy upgrades this year alone.

Furthermore, new categories were introduced to the scheme in March 2026 to combat energy poverty. These include specific, fully funded grants targeted at low-income households. Since their launch, more than 150 low-income families have already submitted applications.

Official Commentary: High Energy Costs Driving the Transition

The dramatic rise in public interest has been welcomed by both environmental and agency leaders:

William Walsh, CEO of SEAI, noted: “Rising energy costs remain a significant concern for many families, which has directly led to this heightened interest in energy upgrade grants.”

Darragh O’Brien, Ireland’s Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, highlighted: There has been a spectacular 186% increase in applications for individual home energy upgrades compared to Q1 of last year. “The data from the first quarter of the year clearly indicates a positive trend, showcasing substantial growth in both demand and output,” the minister remarked.

The Bigger Picture

This Q1 boom builds on a strong foundation. Since 2019, over 250,000 home energy upgrades have been successfully completed across Ireland.

Additionally, report data from Solar Ireland shows that the country added a total of 1 GW of PV capacity in 2025. While utility-scale installations predominated the market, residential and rooftop solar continue to demonstrate powerful, consistent growth.
