Ground Mount Solar Installation: Engineering Guide

Planning a ground mount solar installation? Confirm the site survey, foundation, structural loads, array layout, construction sequence, electrical interfaces and O&M scope before ordering equipment.

Site Assessment and Foundation Selection

Review topography, soil, groundwater, rock, drainage, access, utilities, flood conditions and environmental exposure. Select driven piles, ground screws, concrete or another foundation only after the load-transfer and installation requirements are documented.

Ground Mount Installation Process

From survey to final inspection

  1. Confirm the survey, array layout, setbacks, row spacing, access roads and cable routes.
  2. Complete geotechnical and structural review for the chosen foundation and design loads.
  3. Set out foundation locations and install piles, screws or concrete elements according to approved documents.
  4. Assemble posts, beams, rails, braces, fasteners and bonding components; check alignment and torque.
  5. Install modules and cable management while protecting conductors from abrasion, standing water and unsupported spans.
  6. Complete structural, electrical, safety and documentation checks before commissioning.

Fixed-Tilt and Tracking Ground Mount Systems

Fixed-tilt arrays use a static geometry. Tracking systems add drives, controls, stow behavior, clearances and moving cable-management requirements. Compare both with the same module, energy-model, terrain, foundation and maintenance assumptions.

Loads, Materials and Corrosion

Provide local wind, snow, seismic, temperature and corrosion criteria. Check material grades, coatings, fasteners, dissimilar-metal interfaces, drainage and inspection points in the approved bill of materials. Generic load or lifespan claims do not replace project-specific calculations and documents.

Ground Mount Solar O&M Planning and Handover

Define access, fastener and corrosion inspection, vegetation or surface management, drainage, cable routes, tracker controls when applicable, spare parts and replacement procedures. Assign responsibilities and required records in the project handover scope.

Installation RFQ Checklist

Provide the site plan, topographic and geotechnical information, module layout, environmental design criteria, foundation preference and requested engineering deliverables. Use the ground-mount systems overview and send project information through the SolarMountX RFQ page.

Ground-Mount Engineering Guides

Use these guides to connect the ground-mount structure with operations, maintenance, foundation and RFQ decisions.

Ground-Mount Installation Checks by Stage

Use the same approved design information through construction. A ground-mount solar installation can fail at the interface between survey, foundation, structure, module layout and cable management even when each activity is considered separately.

StageChecks before moving onEvidence to retain
Survey and set-outConfirm array boundaries, row spacing, setbacks, access, utilities, drainage and foundation coordinates.Approved survey, marked layout, set-out records and open-item register.
Foundation installationVerify the selected pile, screw, concrete or ballast method against soil, load, level, alignment and installation limits.Installation records, refusal or torque notes where applicable, concrete records, inspection photos and deviations.
Racking assemblyCheck posts, beams, rails, braces, connections, material compatibility, alignment and approved torque or fastening procedures.Component traceability, torque records, connection checks and approved change notes.
Modules and cable routesConfirm module clamp zones, clearances, conductor support, abrasion protection, drainage paths and bonding interfaces.String map, cable inspection, bonding results, photographs and as-built changes.
HandoverClose structural, electrical, safety, access, maintenance and document requirements before commissioning.Final drawings, BOM, inspection records, maintenance plan, exclusions and acceptance record.

Ground-Mount Foundation and Racking Evidence

Request a clear connection between the design inputs and the installed work. The project file should identify the environmental criteria, soil or geotechnical basis, foundation reactions or connection assumptions, material and coating specification, fastener details, installation tolerances and responsibility for field changes. Generic claims about wind resistance, speed or service life do not replace project-specific calculations and inspection records.

For tracking arrays, add tracker geometry, drive and control installation, stow behavior, moving cable clearances, alignment, commissioning and maintenance access to the same evidence set. For fixed-tilt arrays, document the static row geometry, foundation route, module layout and inspection boundary.

Ground-Mount Installation RFQ and Handover Checklist

  1. Send the site plan, topography, soil or geotechnical information, drainage, access and utility constraints.
  2. Define module data, array layout, orientation, tilt, row spacing, cable routes and maintenance access.
  3. State wind, snow, seismic, corrosion, flood, temperature and other applicable design inputs.
  4. Request foundation and structural documents, BOM, installation instructions, inspection records and stated exclusions.
  5. Assign responsibility for set-out, foundation verification, field changes, commissioning, as-built drawings and O&M handover.

Ground Mount O&M Checklist

Planning ground mount O&M? Define inspection access, foundations, fasteners, corrosion, cable routes, drainage, vegetation or surface management and handover records for the selected array.

What should a ground mount O&M plan include?

Start with the actual layout and asset register. The plan should identify row and foundation checks, fasteners and connections, material or coating condition, cable support, drainage, access routes, vegetation or surface management, safety controls and the evidence required to close each finding. Assign each activity to the responsible EPC, owner or qualified service team.

Fixed-tilt vs tracking ground-mount O&M

O&M areaFixed-tilt arrayTracking array
Structure and foundationInspect alignment, fasteners, foundations, module attachments, drainage and visible corrosion or movement.Inspect the same static elements plus tracker geometry, moving clearances and equipment supports.
Electrical and cable routeCheck supported conductors, connectors, transitions, abrasion protection and equipment access.Add moving cable loops or transitions, stow position, control interfaces and clearance through the motion envelope.
Handover evidenceKeep final layout, BOM, installation instructions, inspection records and stated exclusions.Keep those records plus controls documents, commissioning boundaries, service responsibilities and spare-part assumptions.

Which documents should the O&M team receive?

Request the approved layout, row or equipment identifiers, foundation and connection information, product drawings, bill of materials, installation instructions, inspection records, controls documents where applicable, maintenance responsibilities, exclusions and the change log. Treat missing information as an open item rather than assuming a generic maintenance procedure applies.

Use the ground-mount systems overview for system selection, download the solar mounting resources for project documents, or request an O&M scope review with the available site and handover information.
