Solar Carport Installation for EPCs: Engineering and Permitting Guide
Planning a solar carport installation? Coordinate the parking survey, foundations, structural design, permitting, PV layout, electrical scope, drainage and maintenance access before construction.
Site Assessment and Feasibility
Begin with a current parking plan and site survey. Record bays, drive aisles, accessible routes, headroom, lighting, fire access, pavement condition, drainage, utilities and construction access. Confirm whether the project is a new canopy, a retrofit or a phased installation.
Engineering and Permitting Requirements
- Structural: define the load path, spans, columns, connections, foundation reactions and local wind, snow, seismic and corrosion criteria.
- Foundation: review soil, slab, pavement, utilities, drainage, excavation restrictions and restoration requirements.
- PV and electrical: provide module layout, tilt, inverter positions, cable routes, interconnection and EV or storage interfaces.
- Approvals: confirm zoning, building, electrical, fire, accessibility, stormwater and utility requirements with the responsible authorities.
- Construction: define parking closures, delivery routes, lifting, sequencing, safety controls and commissioning boundaries.
Solar Carport Installation Sequence
From survey to commissioning
- Verify the survey, parking geometry, underground utilities and foundation concept.
- Complete the structural, drainage, PV and electrical design review.
- Obtain required approvals and coordinate the construction and parking-management plan.
- Install foundations and columns, then verify location, level, connection and curing requirements.
- Assemble beams, canopy members, rails, modules, cable management and drainage interfaces.
- Complete electrical testing, structural inspection, document handover and commissioning.
Energy Modeling and Maintenance
Use the actual module layout, shading, inverter limits, weather assumptions, soiling, albedo and operating plan in the energy model. Do not use a generic yield or ROI percentage as a project result. The O&M plan should define inspection access, fasteners, corrosion, drainage, cable routes, monitoring, spare parts and parking-safety responsibilities.
RFQ Checklist for EPCs
Send the marked parking plan, survey, pavement or soil information, module data, design criteria, permitting status, electrical scope and required drawings or BOM. Ask the supplier to identify assumptions, exclusions, installation limits and the documents included with the quotation.
